SWAMP Represented at the FRUCT 24 Conference in Moscow

A training day on SEPA (SPARQL Event Processing Architecture), a core element of the SWAMP platform, was held in Moscow (9-10 April 2019) during the FRUCT 24 conference (fruct.org) and the SWAMP project has been presented as a use case.

SWAMP members also presented a paper entitled “Mapping the NGSI-LD context model on top of a SPARQL Event Processing Architecture: implementation guidelines” which represents a first attempt to implement the NGSI-LD specification on top of SEPA. This would allow SEPA to become a FIWARE Generic Enabler, enhancing FIWARE with the Dynamic Linked Data support.

SWAMP and green economy: presentation of the project @Ecomondo 2018

Saving, efficiency, and reuse: those are three keywords that describe the management of water resources in a “circular” perspective. In particular, the SWAMP project is focused on the first two and tries to provide smart solutions for water utilization in agriculture. These and other innovative technologies were discussed last Wednesday, November 7, 2018 during the seminar ” Efficient and sustainable management of water resources in agriculture” that was held at the Ecomondo fair in Rimini, Italy.

Now in its 23rd edition, ECOMONDO is the leading trade fair in the Euro-Mediterranean zone for all sectors involved in the circular economy. During the event, all the areas of the green economy are represented, from the recovery of materials and energy to sustainable development, and all the involved stakeholders take part: industries, start-ups, universities, ministries, and research institutions meet for a dialogue aimed at boosting innovation towards the efficient use of resources.

A whole pavilion is specially dedicated to water, the Global Water Expo, where a wide program of conferences explores the latest technologies and approaches for the best use of such resources in terms of efficiency in all sectors. Among these, the agricultural field stands out both from a quantitative and a qualitative point of view: according to the OECD, agriculture uses about 70% of the water withdrawn in the world today and also contributes to water pollution due to excess nutrients. pesticides and other pollutants. Moreover, in a short to medium-term scenario, the growing pressure from urbanization, industrialization and climate change will generate greater competition for the exploitation of water resources for the agricultural sector.

During the seminar “Efficient and sustainable management of water resources in agriculture” some research efforts from the last few years have been presented. All the exposed works try to address the problem by following two different approaches: the first one is based on the reuse of purified wastewater for irrigation to increase the availability of water resources; the second one aims at developing efficient irrigation systems for rational use of water. The SWAMP project is placed in this second strand: within this framework, the objectives of the project and the actions undertaken in the various pilots were shown, highlighting the specific needs of each area. Special emphasis was given to the Italian case study, to the possibilities offered by the IoT approach, and to the challenges faced with the integration of data from sensors and models in the platform.

The symposium was an opportunity to share experiences similar or complementary to SWAMP, and, the comparison with them can generate new ideas and improvements for the project.

SWAMP present at WWRF 41

SWAMP project was presented at Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) meeting 41 in Herning, Denmark at August 31. WWRF (www.wwrf.ch) is a global community that tackles research challenges in the wireless communication domain. Currently, 5G mobile system specification issue is the hottest topic. Recently, WWRF has started activities for developing virtual integration platforms (VIPs) for various domains. In the WWRF41 event, a special session was held in 5G and water management and SWAMP was one of the invited attendants.

Our presentation aimed at providing a user perspective and requirement perspective for mobile communication experts. Agriculture and irrigation water management have specific features that should also be taken into account in future mobile networks. Our pilots also highlight nicely different situations and conditions that also 5G has to face in the future.

The WWRF is a global community and discussion covered for example Japan, India, and Africa. It was very easy to see that water is a global issue.

SWAMP presented at FAUBAI 2018

The SWAMP project was presented at FAUBAI 2018 (faubai.org.br/conf/2018), the Annual Conference of the Brazilian Association for International Education.
The oral presentation was titled “Research Cooperation between Brazil and Europe in ICT: Experience with Joint Calls” and SWAMP was highlighted as an example of an EU-BR collaboration research project selected in the 4th joint call.

Brazil and Europe have been launching coordinated calls for the development of collaborative research projects in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), focusing on topics such as Future Internet, Cloud Computing, Smart Cities, Big Data, 5G Networks and Internet of Things. Since 2010, four coordinated calls have been launched resulting in 193 proposals submitted involving hundreds of institutions (universities, research institutes, companies, and government agencies) on both continents. From those proposals, 20 were selected, and each party funded 25 million euros. In Brazil, these proposals are funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Communications (MCTIC) and run by RNP (the National Network of Research and Education), having the European Commission as its counterpart in Europe. The four calls were launched in 2010 (goo.gl/fpThxm), 2012 (goo.gl/XMTCfi), 2014 (goo.gl/ss4pmL) and 2016 (goo.gl/B6DVxK). Currently, projects selected in the first and second calls are already finished, projects selected in the third call are in progress and projects selected in the four calls started in the end of 2017. The outcomes in terms of research contributions and increased collaboration
between Brazil and Europe have been positively assessed and therefore a fifth call is already being planned.
